What is DEGIRO?
Online stock broker DEGIRO launched its online stock brokerage services in the Netherlands in 2013.
DEGIRO now has over two million clients spread over 15 European countries – including Ireland.

In 2021, DeGiro B.V. merged with flatexDEGIRO Bank AG , creating the biggest online execution-only broker in Europe with its own banking license.
As well as European and US stock exchanges, DEGIRO also offers access to markets in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and several others worldwide. (over 50 in total).
You can use the DEGIRO desktop site or their mobile app for share dealing. The account currency for Irish customers is in Euros only.

How Is DEGIRO Regulated in Ireland ?
Flatex DEGIRO Bank Dutch Branch, trading under the name DEGIRO, is the Dutch branch of flatexDEGIRO Bank AG.
As a German regulated bank, flatexDEGIRO Bank AG is primarily supervised by the German financial regulator, the Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht (BaFin).
It uses EU passporting rules to allow it to operate in Ireland and across the EU.
Any money deposited on a DEGIRO Cash Account with flatexDEGIRO Bank AG will be guaranteed up to an amount of EUR 100,000 under the German Deposit Guarantee Scheme. (Shares do not come under this guarantee)
DEGIRO clients’ assets are segregated in separate entities and are therefore protected against the insolvency of DEGIRO. In the unlikely event that the segregated assets cannot be returned to clients, DEGIRO is a member of the German Investor Compensation Scheme, which compensates any losses from non-returned assets up to 90% (with a maximum of €20,000).
How Much are the Fees on DEGIRO in Ireland ?
Here is a summary of the share trading fees on DEGIRO Ireland. (2024)
- Irish shares : €2 per trade plus a €1 handling fee.
- UK Shares €3.90 per trade plus €1 handling fee plus 0.25% currency conversion.
- European shares: €3.90 per trade plus €1 handling fee.
- US shares : €1 per trade plus €1 handling fee plus 0.25% currency conversion.
- ETFs – €2 per trade (Plus a €1 handling fee.) (Some have lower fees)
- Annual fees – DEGIRO has an annual fee for connecting you to each exchange. This fee is currently €2.50 per exchange per year (capped at 0.25% of your account value.) There is no fee for Irish residents using the Irish exchange.
DEGIRO does not charge any inactivity fees, and money transfers and withdrawals are free of charge.

How to Open an Account With Degiro in Ireland
To open a DEGIRO Ireland account you must be over 18 years of age.
You will need a valid form of identification, have tax residence and physical residence in Ireland, and have a bank account held in your name in the SEPA zone.
You will need a smartphone to register- you will be asked to scan your ID with your phone camera and take a selfie to confirm your identity.
You will need to provide your PPS number and contact details.
Before you can trade you will need to transfer funds from a bank account in your name.

How to Deposit Funds With DEGIRO
Customer deposits can only be made in Euros on DEGIRO by bank transfer and there is no minimum deposit amount.
DEGIRO is partnered with Flatex Bank and is covered by the German Deposit Guarantee Scheme. This means that DEGIRO client’s uninvested cash is covered, up to €100,000.
DEGIRO does not charge any inactivity fees, and money transfers and withdrawals are free of charge.

What stocks can I buy with DEGIRO ?
All the major stock exchanges are accessible with DEGIRO Ireland (over 50 exchanges in 30 countries). . Including:-

So if you want to buy shares in companies such as TESLA, NIO , Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, AMD. Bank of Ireland , AIB, Ryanair or Pfizer – you can buy them all on DEGIRO.
Tip for avoiding stamp duty on UK company shares.
Many UK (FTSE) listed companies also have their shares listed on EU stock exchanges. You can avoid UK stamp duty of 0.5% and a EU/GBP currency conversion fee of 0.25% by buying these UK company shares on European stock markets on DEGIRO. This would add up to a 1.5% saving on a purchase and subsequent sale . On a total buy/sell – for example – of €10,000 Euro – this would save you €150 in fees and stamp duty.

Can you buy fractional shares at DEGIRO ?
Some online brokers allow you to buy “fractional” shares – but DEGIRO does not currently allow this.
Owning a fractional share means that you could, for example, invest €100 in a company whose shares cost €1000 each. (i.e – You will own one-tenth of a share.).

Low Fees on ETFs with DEGIRO
DEGIRO offers a selection of around 70 ETFs in their “Core Selection” to which no commission fees and only a 1 EUR handling fee per transaction apply. Can you Buy Cryptocurrency on DEGIRO Ireland ?
DEGIRO does not allow trading in Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrencies.
You could try Etoro for trading cryptocurrencies.

With DEGIRO it is possible , however, to buy shares in some Bitcoin trackers (ETPs).
