Tax Clearance Cert and Non Payment of Household Charge

There have been newspaper reports in recent weeks saying that the  Revenue Commission might withhold tax clearance certificates from anyone  who has not paid the household charge .

This is not true – and it was confirmed by  Minister of Finance , Mchael Noonan that the  Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government is responsible for the administration of the Household Charge .
He stated that the Household Charge does not currently come within the scope of the taxes and duties that are covered by the existing legislation governing the Tax Clearance scheme operated by the Revenue Commissioners.

So – for now – anyone who hasn’t paid the charge will not lose any tax clearance certificate. (Good news for the TD’s who would have lost their jobs without a cert)
