The controversial Household Charge will be debated in the Seanad today – and is expected to be passed before the end of the week . The Local Government (Household Charge) Bill 2011 should come into force from January 2012 – and will mean that thousands of home owners will be liable for a €100 charge on each of their properties.
Tenants won’t be liable for the new charge .

Some of the possible changes to the legislation that have been asked for by the Seanad include exemptions for homes purchased under the Affordable Housing scheme; homes on which stamp duty has been paid from January 1st 2004 up unto December 31st 2011 , and exemptions for people on Social Welfare or with Medical Cards.
