Cookies help to make advertising more effective. Without cookies, it’s harder for an advertiser to reach its audience, or to know how many ads were shown and how many clicks they received.
Cookies are just very small text files that are placed on your computer/browser when you visit certain websites. Companies can then track certain information about sites a computer has visited by reading these files. (Such as dates).
This does not mean, however, that we store personal information about you or are aware of your identity.
Despite their bad press cookies:
• Cannot contain viruses
• Cannot access or read your hard drive
• Cannot access your personal information (such as an email address)
• Cannot send emails or control any functions on your computer
To stop cookies being stored on your computer in future, you’ll need to alter the settings of your internet browser. You can find instructions on how to do this either through click ‘Help’ in the menu bar, or following these browser-by-browser instructions from AboutCookies.org.
If you want to delete any cookies that are already on your computer, you’ll need to locate the file or directory that your computer stores them in – this how to delete cookies information should help.
