Hi, I turned 20 on the 4th of January, since then I have been getting 196, but this week I only got 100, I went to the social welfare office, and they said that I should have never received the 196 as last years rules apply to me! I don’t understand this, could someone please help. I’m doing a course funded by FAS, anything they asked me to do, I have done, I just wanna know why they’ve reduced my payment! Please help!

Ciara, if you signed on BEFORE the 30th of December 2009, and turned 20 on the 4th of January the rules set in the Budget 2009 and the mini budget apply to your application- because of this you should receive the higher adult rate upon your 20th birthday, in order to get the higher rate you DO NOT have to participate in a FAS course, because you are not considered a ‘new claimant’

Reject the €100 and appeal against it. Good luck

Ciara, If you signed on after the 30th of December the new rules apply.

I am going to be finished my college exams at the end of May, I have to complete association exams after this however so i will have my degree but will not be qualified to work as this till mid July (when I complete these outside of college exams). So my question is will I be entitled to any sort of job seekers benefit/allowance during this month where I will be finished college but not able to work. i have also been working part-time for the last 3 years in the same place of which I have recently been let go.

Hi, i am 20,Have been working since i was 16 and just got let go, i finished college in may.Just got a reply to my claim for jobseekers allowance, i am only entitled to 40 euro a week, is this right?? i am 21 in september.

    • Money Saving Expert says:

Danielle – are you living with your parents? If you are – the Jobseekers is reduced if your parent’s income is over certain levels. It could be that. If not – ask the Welfare for an explanation. It’s not the full rate…

I’m currently living and working in London but my place of employment is shutting down.I’m 22 and unqualified,my parents are separated and I would be relying on my low income farming father to support me if I did move home.any idea how much I would be entitled to per week if I did move home?
