Household Charge

The Household Charge is a new tax on home owners that came into force in Ireland on January 1st 2012. It is expected to raise €160 million a year.
The charge was introduced as one of the requirements mentioned in the IMF  EU bailout  agreement. This Household Charge – sometimes referred to as the Household Tax or Home Tax – is €100 for 2012 . It is planned to be a only temporary measure while a full property tax system is planned and implemented.  (2014 target date).

The purpose of the Household Charge legislation was two-fold – 1) to require the owners of certain residential properties to pay an annual charge to local authorities.  2) The legislation also requires  the provision of information relating to each property to enable the preparation of a database of  residential properties in the state.

  2. Andrew says:

they say it is cheaper than the uk but people there get help if they cant afford the charge also they dont then pay for rubbish to be collected they have all school books supplied you get all sorts in you charge we had to pay thousands in tax when we bought the house pay all the school bills and now we are getting stung again i have ha a decrease in income in disability and careers and more expenses with no help i think the government should look at this if you were greedy got a huge house you are excempt if you live on an unfinished estate you are excdempt if you try and live in a small house within your means you are hammered it is totaly wrong and just to bail out the bankers and people who were greedy and risked money to make a big profit and the government are not only refunding there investment they are giving them the big fat profit it is did=sgusting

  3. My youngest child attends school in Donegal. The parents have to pay towards the cost of heating oil and electricity. We pay for school books for 3 children. Our septic tank is our responsibility, our water we pay for on a group scheme,we pay weekly to have our bin emptied. We are in the same position as most of this country and now we’re expected to pay a made up ‘household charge’.I won’t be paying and look forward to any representative from the government knocking on my door asking me if i’ve paid.I wont be paying!

  4. Ceith says:

There is no law saying we have to pay the new house hold charge.. With out a law in place there is nothing they can do if I or every one else does not pay..

There was 33,000 millionaires in Ireland which have a total net worth of €156.21 billion between them.
Tax that an extra 1% and that 1.5 billion..

Taxing normal working peoples homes will only take in about 400 million..

Another low blow to the people from the government..

But im sure by 2015 the house hold charge will take in alot more as it will just increase every year..

    • Money Guide says:

Ceith – there is a law in place that makes it an offence not to register or not to pay the household charge. A fine of upto €2500 can be applied on conviction.

  5. B Murphy says:

we are in the middle of selling our house , what is the story there .

    • Money Guide says:

B Murphy … If you owned the house on Jan 1st you are liable for the full charge and you will need to pay it before you sell if you want to avoid any problems or delays.

  6. Ruth says:

I live overseas and have done for the last 5+ years. My apratment is rented and it registered as a rental property – am I liable for this tax also?

    • Money Guide says:

Yes Ruth you are liable – and will now have to pay €111 – because of the €10 late payment fee and 1% interest..
