After another Budget with bad news – we all need to think about cutting costs and saving money. These days – you can’t really do without internet access – but you can switch provider to save a few Euro.

If you are looking for the cheapest  nationally available home phone (landline) and broadband package with up to 8Mb speed as well as free landline calls in Ireland at any time of day – The best  price  available is  from Vodafone at €45 per month.

The Vodafone  at Home package comes with a 40Gb monthly download limit. An added bonus is that you also get 200 anytime minutes free to  Vodafone mobiles. (Worth about €40 Euro ) .
If you sign up online you get a free wireless modem worth €79  and  €20 credit on your account. For €52 a month you can increase your data limit to a massive 300Gb a month.

If you are a Vodafone Mobile Bill Pay  customer -  you can get this bundle for €44 a month and you will get an added bonus of free calls to UK landlines too.

Other broadband providers prices for similar packages:

UPC - which is only available in certain areas of the country -  offer speeds of upto 25Mb  for €53 a month including unlimited anytime phone calls.

UTV charge €55.99 a month for upto 8Mb (20Gb limit) and anytime calls (Uk included)

Eircom charge  €51.78 for a 8Mb bundle with free anytime calls  (€46.99 for first 6 months)  (10Gb Limit)

Magnet charge €59.99 for 8Mb speed with unlimited downloads,no sharing ,  free anytime landline calls .

These days – with all the streaming and downloading of TV programs , songs and Videos – many people are hitting the monthly download limits of their internet providers
If you go above your data transfer limit you could be hit with a fee or you might have your download speeds drastically reduced.
Sometimes internet providers offer “Unlimited“ downloads – but then they hide in the terms and conditions wording that clearly show it is not Unlimited. (UPC are still doing this – with a 250Gb cap )

Magnet offer unlimited broadband on all their packages – and we couldn’t find any comments on forums to say otherwise. Magnet offer 3 “types” of broadband  – and all of them may not be available in all parts of Ireland. With speeds ranging from upto 8Mb to a massive 50Mb. Visit Magnet Ireland here

Vodafone don’t offer unlimited data transfers – but they do offer a pretty big  300Gb a month data transfer limit – it’s not unlimited but it’s bigger that UPC’s supposedly unlimited package.
It costs €62 a month – but that includes unlimited off peak calls to landlines, 200 mins of calls to Vodafone mobiles and line rental

Eircom are still offering free phone line connections until August 31st 2009.
If you want a landline connection in Ireland – Eircom are the only company that can do the connection. Prices of connection vary – depending on the circumstances. The most expensive connection charge would be for a  property that has never had a landline connection previously – i.e a new house. The charge for  that is currently €121.93. The lowest charge would be €25.09
