Having broadband available in a student house is pretty much an essential requirement – for all that online
gaming … studying that will be going on.
Most college provided or purpose-built student accommodation will usually have broadband included as part of the rental agreement – but for those who will be living in shared houses what are the best broadband deals for students?
Most student tenancies will usually last from September to June – about 9 months. So a long broadband contract is probably not a good idea. Most broadband contracts are 12 months long and some are 18 months – if you terminate early you may be liable to pay for the full length of the contract or at least pay an early termination charge.
Broadband Speed and Limits: With several students in one house you are probably going to need unlimited data and a fairly high speed to cope with all those educational downloads 🙂 . Most students probably don’t bother with a landline – but sometimes a bundle of broadband and phone can work out cheaper.
Vodafone has a broadband and phone bundle priced at €420 for the first year. (€25 for the first 6 months then €45 a month) With broadband speeds of up to 100Mb and unlimited downloads ( 1 Tb fair usage cap) and unlimited calls to Irish landlines. If you don’t want the phone line – the price is €40 a month after the first 6 months – so €390 over 12 months.
Pure Telecom . have a fibre and phone bundle costing just €420 in year one. The monthly charge is €50, reduced to €35 for the first 12 months. Anytime landline calls included. Speeds of up to 100Mbs depending on line and location. 12-month contract.
Virgin Media – if it is available in your area – have “Naked 250” broadband-only option that includes unlimited broadband data .It costs €59 a month reduced to €40 for the first 6 months. So over 12 months, it works out at €624. More details and the option to sign up here
Here is a summary of the prices of the cheapest broadband bundles with speeds of at least “up to” 100Mbs and with unlimited data. Prices include any setup or activation fees.
In these calculations below we have assumed that the total length of the contract must be paid for in full. Some providers will allow early termination – but could charge a fee of between €150 and €300.
